What does it mean to be “connected online” in an increasingly fragmented digital world?
The exhibition Connecting to peers opens a conversation about online communities and explores the ways we imagine networks.
More than just technologies, we often understand networks as metaphorical spaces we inhabit. As private zones or public forums, highways or dark forests, the way we imagine these spaces shapes not only our perceptions, but also policies, regulations, infrastructure design, and our behavior within the network.
The exhibition works offer critical and speculative perspectives on networks and infrastructures — from grassroots infrastructures and early Web2.0 ideals to imagined futures with decentralized, organic, inclusive, and ecological networks.
The title of the exhibition is inspired by torrenting software: connecting to peers is the first essential step in downloading content in a peer-to-peer environment, from one user to another, from one peer to another.
Who are our “peers” today? And who will they be tomorrow?
What kinds of connections are still possible between us?
